Just think about it a company which offers almost all its products and services for free and does not spends money on advertising or brand promotion, is one of the highest earning companies in the world. Well we’re talking about GOOGLE. Yes Google the search engine (search engine means a site used to search the internet).
In this article I will share with you some the information I have about Google. After reading it if you want to know more or know more in details just leaves a comment.I will be writing about Google in detail in coming posts.
Google is a company based on INNOVATION and TECHNOLOGY and they have proved that you can indeed make money without being evil(Its their motto along with " Don't Be Evil).Google's officially stated mission is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". The name of the company shows the ambitions of Larry & sergey, one Google means a number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The right spelling of this number is GOOGOL(most people don't know this but now you do).
Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. At that time they were studying for their PhD s in Stanford University (California,USA). Before Google there were many( more than 10) search engines already available and they used different methods to index or search the internet but they all had one problem i.e. the results were not indexed on the basis of their relevance. How big this problem was here is an example to show:-
If you searched the word INKTOMI on one of the search engines in use those days INKTOMI, the engine could not find any appropriate results, not even itself!
Larry and sergey had an idea to solve this problem they developed a special algorithm called “PageRank” to generate search results.
What PageRank does? Basically it gives a relevancy score to each web page and then it arranges the web pages on the base of their score. Google just like any other search engine uses programs called spiders or crawlers, they search the internet to bring the results (Google has a large index of keywords & of locations where words can be found). After that those results are index according to their pagerank score.
Initially Google was launched on website of Stanford university with the address……………. .
It became a instant hit and the popularity was rapidly increasing as whoever used it was really impressed and suggested it to their friends( this is how it got worldwide popularity).
Larry and Sergey wanted to sell their search engine, so that they could complete their studies , but all the big-search-engines of that time were not interested(all them must be regretting their decision).
At last on the advice of Yahhoo! Co-founder David Filo, Larry & Sergey launched Google as a company in 1997.The Domain name Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997.
After launching the search engine as a company Larry & Sergey applied another innovative idea of not placing ads on their homepage instead they used a newer idea of selling KEYWORDS so that they could earn money without being evil.
On September 7, 1998 Google went public & just like the company itself shares of the company have only went up.since then Google has launched many new products and services and acquired many others and is now one of the biggest companies in the whole world.
Google has is a role model for all the new start-ups and entrepreneurs.The most important thing that Google has proved is that YOU CAN MAKE MONEY WITHOUT BEING EVIL.
