According to me the most important reason behind the Gigantic success of social networking sites is the fact that we humans are social animals. it is our basic necessity to communicate and socialize, and these sites let us do exactly that, we can stay in touch with our friends, we can find our old friends who are no longer in touch with you or you can make new friends from any part of the world.As Internet brought the world closer and made it smaller it was Social Networking sites gave us a tool to get in touch with some otherwise unreachable people, For example now you can easily create an Twitter account and after that you can read know what your favorite Actor is feeling or thinking right NOW.
Basically all social networking website let user communicate with other users in a more interactive & personal way other than that they also let users do some or all of these things as well,

2:- users can become friend, fan or follower (whatever the term may be) of other users.
3:-User who are friends can create groups or communities where like minded guys/gals can meet.
4:-users can upload photos, music and videos.
Although all the social networking sites provide same services we all know that there are some which are liked my most(like Orkut in India & Brazil and facebook in the whole world), the reason of this is not very hard to understand if you youself try out few of them you will find some of them to be better than others.
Social networking sites are not just for fun there are infinite possibilities of what can be done one fine example was the My Obama campaign.
But the most important thing these sites do is that they bring people together & gives people a channel to stay in touch noi matter where they or we are.
